There are countless books and blogs about Twitter etiquette. Some say you should follow everyone that follows you. Some say you follow only those with similar interests. Some say you should follow all potential clients or prospects. This post is about why I WON’T follow certain people.

Jenn: I am using a service called JustUnfollow. I got a tip on this service when I wanted to handle Twitter's follow limit rule. I follow >4000 tweeps, but have "only" 3900 followers. JustUnfollow is automatically tweeting out how many new followers and unfollowers per day. Maybe I should change the settings?! ;)

I have heard of the service as well and I think for many it's a great tool and service. But I don't think people really want to know how many new followers you get and how many you unfollow every day. If I were you, I would change the settings - but keep using the tool for your benefit.

Hi Jenn,

Well, I have to admit I haven't seen too many bios with all hashtags. Maybe I don't get out enough. :) I would qualify #4 on your list by saying there is a natural ebb and flow of tweets, and that what I look for are accounts that have at least periods of activity. Natural sharing may not be a set number of times a day or week and sometimes people, including myself, like to unplug a bit. This said, I would add another point, those who tweet too often. A steady stream of tweets that overwhelm my feed and block out everyone else is a big turnoff. Maybe it's just me. It's kind of like being with someone who won't let anyone else get a word in edgewise.

Yes, Heather, it is true that some people go through the ebbs and flows on Twitter (unlike my Twitter obsessed self!) and that's great. So long as I can see a trend that they're on there and care enough to interact with others, I'll be happy to connect with them. As for the ones who have endless streams of hundreds of tweets - I agree, it's too much. But I have to admit that when I get into a Twitter chat my feed starts to look like that. Fortunately, it's only for an hour or two a couple times a week though.

Great article! In my experience, I have a twitter account and at first follow all random people and ask for a follow back but then I realize it is better to follow people who you have interest with. So that you'll enjoy what you see in your home page.

Agreed! And a lot of those "randoms" are often just trying to bump their numbers and don't actually value your follow. I look for people who are looking to connect for real and whose posts I can actually enjoy.
