thanks for your comment,
Automation is generally done for posting, that is scheduling regular updates - as micro blogging on the social media does require freequent updates. But when it comes to monitoring engagement - that needs to be done manually. The tools are mostly for getting notifications - something that none of the social sites does properly on their own.
Here's what I personally do, I use some of these tools to schedule and monitor activity. Say, a tool updates me of activity on Google+ - I quickly respond to it. It is effective to keep an eye on the engagement and be more active where the need is.
It is very effective for startups and single owners, I don't have a bunch of people monitoring social media for my company, I mostly do it myself - and these tools helps a lot. They keep me updated about the activity and I can quickly find out where I need to respond and push the engagement further. If I had to do it manually, I have to post on every social site myself - about 3 to 5 times a day - then check them all, one by one - and see if there are any notifications. That will be insane!

thanks for your comment,
Yes, there's so many social media tools - however am pretty sure the right one will do the work, but we still have to use many before we settle down with our own favorite tool,
