Listen to Rob Greenlee's interview with Chris Brogan, and his take on Twitter and other stuff.

David: Thanks for your link. I am glad to hear that we are on the same wavelength! :) I hope Twitter will get back to the basics in the future, otherwise they could end up with a mess of "bots" talking to "bots"...

I think Twitter and others should take more against, instead of being a hassle for serious users like me! ;) I have been struggling with their follow limit rule for some time. It is said that robots and fake profiles are a big part of the Internet nowadays. The solution would be that you pay for the usage in some way, using micro-transactions.

Agreed that more action needs to be taken. But it has to be the right action. That action should be against the fake followers and those who sell them.

We mentioned a quick solution here:

http://www.bizsugar.com/SocialMedia/why-is-twitter-so-relaxed-on-fake-followers-syndrome-blog-writing-services-essex-twofeetmarketing/

And I think that Twitter should be more relaxed on follower limits. For example, there are some that don't want to create updates but rather read others. These people aren't going to attract followers and are therefore stifled.

Yet this is all dependent on Twitter realising what is best for user experience and ensuring the right safe guards in place. I can't see that happening soon.

I haven't heard about people buying fake followers for competitors' accounts. That is scary.

It is no different than those who use link farms to lower the Google Page Rank of competitors. Although I admit, it is probably a rare occurrence at the moment.

However, if Twitter and others take more direct action against those with fake followers, I can see it becoming a headache on Social Media.

David: Thanks for pointing out the problem with fake followers. Do you think many small business owners have bought fake followers?

There is no doubt about it. I've had two clients who have done it before I showed them the damage it can do. But to be fair, neither knew the followers were fake as they are advertised as 'real'.

It should be noted that it isn't just those buying fake followers for their own accounts. There are those that buy them for a competitor's account. This is an attempt to taint the reputation of their rivals.
