Seeing it from a positive view, he's doing socialization through gaming. It does have benefits if it's controlled. They say it improves the brain. It distracts us when we're hurt. Help us gain motor skills( used as a physiotherapy ), when we had an accident. It induces decision-making. It improves hand-eye coordination. It also enhances creativity and some video games improve language, cognitive and math skills of the gamer.
On the other hand, according to Violent Video Games (2010), “playing violent video games can make some adolescents more hostile, particularly those who are less agreeable, less conscientious and easily angered”. Blake (2006) discovered that, “Women are not usually used in video games, and when they are, their purpose is usually sex appeal”. This causes children to think of women as just good looking objects to have sexual relations with. For me gaming provokes laziness - no physical doings and unhealthy eating habits if uncontrolled.
Also, too much of a good thing isn't as good as it is.
By the way, I just thought of it, did she try to cut off her son's access to online games?
