Hey Duncan, I'm not actually Joshua, but I help write for the site. I totally agree. It would be disrespectful to add someone and then spam them with updates. On the otherhand, if it's not spammed, it's pretty unobtrusive, and I don't think it would be too much of a social blunder to add people without asking first. It's easy enough to unsubscribe from a group anyways.
