StumbleUpon is one of those sites we've had on our radar for quite some time. We covered the company's redesign last year, which re-focused the site on topic features. So when StumbleUpon snuck in a strange change the other day without telling anyone, we were shocked. This update made it impossible to get direct links for the pages one is stumbling unless they choose to not sign-in to the service. The entire point of StumbleUpon, for the user, is to build up a taste graph that will better deliver stories that the user would like. But many sites depend on...

I'm confused about this whole issue. I didn't even know you could use StumbleUpon without the extension. LOL!! I mean, what's the point of making these changes and not letting users know what the new rules are?

I get a lot of traffic from SU, but I doubt that it can ever be replaced by Pinterest. :(

The problem with the "it has a role to play" view is that people and businesses end up holding on to way too many social networking accounts. Even where there is some benefit received, you still need to evaluate how much and in what way as well as how much effort/resources are you dedicating to it all.

Maybe for some people the changes at StumbleUpon mean it will be time to move on, for others not.

I agree with David it has a role to play. It is the flavour at the moment because it is new and people are talking about it. The problem is like all new tools or sites some jump in without thinking whether it is going to be of benefit for their business.

I've used SU but haven't explored Pinterest fully yet. This said, I'm generally suspicious of the "flavor of the month" social media effect when everyone defects from an older platform for the latest thing.

Pinterest is only for image-based content. Like StumbleUpon and BizSugar and Zoomit.ca and other social sharing sites, it has a role to play. But that doesn't mean ditching the others.

Pinterest really is taking the web, but I still see value in StumbleUpon. Some of our sites get substantial traffic from SU. Great article!
