I think it depends on the kind of negative commenting we're discussing. Debate about a post can be a good thing. Debate fosters community. And, as others have pointed out, constructive criticism can be good for you. But personal attacks on a blogger or other members of your community serve no productive purpose and you may wish to consider deleting these for the benefit of the community. I'm all for free speech, but I don't think this requires you to allow your site to be overtaken by trolls.

While, I've gotten an overwhelming response of people who love my blog, I have gotten one or two negative comments. I've simply done exactly what you described in your post. I saw no need to go back and forth with them but I did think it was important that I at least respond to the comments because I care about what I do.
