Next time you’re ready to fire off an invitation on LinkedIn consider the person you’re targeting. What do you offer them? Are you trying to boost your profile or are you genuinely looking for ways to increase both your opportunities?

The idea of LinkedIn is supposed to be to connect with the people you already know from elsewhere, such as BizSugar or Twitter (or real life?). If I get an invite from a stranger - I don't care who the stranger might be - I ignore it.

LinkedIn is the granddaddy of social media tools and was around long before the free-for-all of virtual friendships brought on by Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. It was intended as a tool to keep your network lodged in one place that was easily updated. I still use it this way. I love the new "ignore" button which makes it a bit easier to get rid of the social media groupies.
