Social media for regulated industries is a hot topic – and one that’s shrouded in mystery. Cracking the code to this beast is a challenge due to the multiple layers of risk and the unclear rules surrounding how social media is legally categorized.

Yes, this is a complicated subject, but the biggest takeaway is that there are universal best practices that can and should be applied to any business’s social media presence – regardless of whether or not that business is highly regulated.

Hi Rachel,

Due to some of the challenges involved in regulated industries(the insurance industry is another one that comes to mind) has it been your experience these business are less inclined to outsource their social media tasks as opposed to having someone inside the industry handle it who may be more aware of the rules?

Hey Heather. It really depends on the business and its structure. I have a handful of clients in regulated industries. But there are some who are hesitant to embrace social media altogether because of the regulations. The key to outsourcing with any business is a good relationship between us and the client. Again, regardless of industry.

Great question!
