Yesterday, I visited À l’Épi de Blé, the only French bakery I know of in Winnipeg. A friend of mine had recommended it warmly.

Very true. The best marketing for small business owners is the one that doesn't cost a lot of money. Word of mouth is the best examples of this. If you provide quality product and excellent customer service the marketing will take care by itself.

Very true Cendrine. Word of mouth is always the best form of advertising. And for those that have Social Media working well for them word of mouth happens there too. Through building relationships online you get recommendations. I know that from my own experience too. Thanks for sharing on Bizsugar.com

Cendrine, very interesting post, and definitely true. Some of the best places and businesses I have discovered have been from word of mouth from friends and colleagues. But I think in social media the problem is that many of these relationships are impersonal or just not close. Out of 200 or more friends on Facebook, I might only consider the recommendations of a handful, because essentially they're talking to a crowd, not to me personally. There is no personal touch in social media unless one takes the time to actually engage, and even for "social media experts" that is very time consuming. What are your thoughts?

Well, I think it really depends on the person. Social media is a wonderful tool, but you have to learn to leverage it.

I always try to reply to as many people as possible online. Treating others the way we would like to be treated is always important.
