Sam Spade, the hard edged protagonist of The Maltese Falcon, is in some ways the quintessential small business owner. He is a private detective (or dick if you prefer) with an office, a partner, a secretary and a network that would make a social media climber swoon. As a small business owner he takes on the risks of running a business and enjoys the rewards. He sets his own prices which vary significantly depending on the client and the job. And despite his womanizing and wayward ways, he also embodies qualities that would behoove business owners to emulate.

May I say:
I'm in charge, shee! I'm in control, shee! I'm the boss, shee!
(I've never been so "sea" sick!) One of the all-time greats!

Sam Spade, as envisioned by the writer, was supposed to be tall and blonde, but apparently Bogart was so convincing that he got the part.

Your wonderful article is a true classic! I absolutely loved it. Spade is a tough honcho and one,as you state, who we should try to channel in our business lives. I would hate to have to deal with a client who is like him though, that would be rough. As for the lack of his gun, it is a point of admiration. All of the best oldies used their minds rather than bullets.
I absoluttely adored your article!
