It's true that it's important to stick to your core product, your core success, and really explore the possibilities there first. Definitely one should give careful consideration before diversifying, however the case you provide doesn't to me seem too far a leap, that is, with very careful planning and consideration. I'd have to do quite a bit of analysis before leaping, though.
