So many local garage bands wanting to make their 3-song demo tape in the '90's had that experience - they'd blow $1k-3K paying an amateur to record them, then wise up & get their own equipment. Every time I heard it, it was always the same story - the guy spent more time setting up & trying to get mic levels than recording the music - all on the band's dime.
