When Kevin Hale and his co-founders Chris and Ryan launched their site Wufoo.com, they had a dedicated community of 30,000 people paying attention. Tim,

It's a chicken or the egg thing really, but I strongly suspect that following or community has to come first. Otherwise, who will be listening? Of course, what content producers also must realize is that communities are not all created equal. Certainly, when it comes time for a business model, it must fit with the community you have created, and perhaps that's really where some strategies need to be thought of upfront.

Completely agree Shawn. Having a community of folks that like what you're doing will always help you launch your new project or venture. But you need to make sure what you're doing jives with that community first. Can't be forcing anything down their throats. :)
