I always consider difficult times to be the best times to start business or reposition your existing business to take advantage of the opportunity. Some of the best companies, such as HP, were started in difficult times. The key is to assess your business vis-a-vis competition and take actions that will not only help you survive the business in the short-term, but also help it grow when economy does improve.

I would also add that you should cut your costs to stay profitable and cash flow positive during difficult times and see if there are other buyout or customer acquisition opportunities due to some of the competitors going out of business.
