There are three things certain in life: death, taxes... and the fact that today's cutting edge electronic device will become a virtual obsolete dinosaur in a couple of years. How can small business owners keep up with the tech trends while keeping money in their coffers?

Adam,

I bought my latest used laptop at some company in Tel Aviv that refurbishes old laptops. The company says it's a great green approach, but here, where electronics are hugely expensive it just made financial sense.

When Yoni's mom heard how good the prices were, she offered to buy him one. He said "what the hell would I do with a freaking laptop?" When she persisted, he said if she got him one he would send it back. She also offered to buy him a cellphone several years back and he said the same thing. Go figure.

Yoni is sleeping since he will be away for a few days but I'm going to vote for you from his account...shhh...our secret!

Interesting, Adam - but I'm afraid of handing anything over to anyone that has my personal/financial/business information locked inside. It's difficult & time-consuming, but a hard-drive can indeed be dismantled & destroyed w/o any special tools. The local office supply chains also offer in-house recycling, but I've read that sometimes these devices are shipped overseas to what turn out to be unscrupulous people - who then steal all the ID info & wreak havoc.

Very good point, Duncan. I'm going to add it to my post.

There *are* ways, however, to permanently delete any information and files stored on the hard drive of a computer/laptop. Two free options to look into are:

Darik's Boot and Nuke- http://www.dban.org/

and

Secure Delete by Object Media http://www.objmedia.demon.co.uk/freeSoftware/secureDelete.html
