Not too many years ago it was quite easy to listen in on people’s cellphone calls using a standard scanner, but the advent of GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) technology made the use of a scanner obsolete in eavesdropping on the digital signal. Recently, however, two researchers published information stating they had found a way to intercept GSM calls using a cheap and, what they say, is a relatively easy way of intercepting these conversations. GSM cellphones are used worldwide and make up a large portion of the worldwide cellphone market so such a discovery could be a privacy and security issue for businesses worldwide.
