Lessons Learned From The Eben Pagan How To Be Creative and Innovative Course
"Hey Val, The flip side to everyone having some area in their life in which they are super creative in is that we all face challenges that need creativity and innovation applied to them whether it's for writing blog posts, writing emails, or simply planning out a fun vacation. In the world of the Knowledge Worker - someone working primarily with their mind; not just their body/time/mind - creativity and innovation is THE name of the game. Without having this capacity working in your favor, at high levels, you're gonna get left behind and run over by the people who do. I'm a big geek on the evolutionary psychology so I also loved learning about the three brains. If you're really intrigued by this field too, I highly suggest you look up Eben's stuff. He's done a ton of workshops on this where he makes the difficult; practical and applicable to the lives of entrepreneurs. Love this guy!!!"9 Ways to Write Clear Copy
"Hey Val, This guy is doing some awesome work and I can't recommend reading his "clear communication" highly enough to people who believe they've got room for improvement. He is very efficient and as a bonus, he's a fun loving dude so he's entertaining to read as well. Thanks for taking the time to tell me what you thought :)"When Is The Best Time To Write Blog Posts?
"I feel my writing flows freshest after I’ve had at least 7 hours of sleep (so important) and my mind has had this extended break from being “creative”. As of lately, it’s been taking me around 12 hours to put together a 5,000 + word blog post. I split this into two days. By the last hour or two of the first day my mind starts wanting a break from having to come up with what to say and so this is when I let it have a break and I start doing cosmetic adjustments to the piece, fonts, pictures, editing/proofreading, stuff that is brain dead simple. I’ve also found that having a 35 minute in the middle of the day is awesome but I think I want to start experimenting with meditating during this time because since I started making sure I get my 7 hours of sleep I’m not so tired at my nap time as I used to be when I’d get 4-6 hours of sleep. Sleep and shifting gears to giving the “creative” part of the mind have instrumental to me consistently producing. :)"Is It OK to Be Friends With Your Employees?
"The whole idea of "not playing favorites" can be hard to resist - especially if you've got somebody you've hired who is mega-charismatic. They're almost always going to be more interesting to be around and be really good at conversation and live interesting lives so it's hard to not give this person more attention than the low key person who is smooth doer but not a smooth talker. Another rule of thumb I learned from John Wooden, the most successful college basketball coach ever, was to let it be known that you're not going to treat everyone the same, but instead are going to treat them according to what they've earned and deserved. So in his case, the people that performed well in practice and performed well in games, got to start to start the game and everyone else was second string. This one is hard to forget when you've got a smooth talker but not a smooth doer who uses their "friendship" to get you to give them preferential treatment they haven't earned nor do they deserve. Thank you Yaniv for reminding me of such important lessons. :)"23 Professional Tips for Social Media Marketing
"I love... #22 Gather E-mail Addresses This one is so important to remember because social media sites can go away and people WILL jump ship on them when they aren't the IT place to be but if we've built up an awesome relationship with a list email subscribers that have come to us from the varied social media channels, that's not going anywhere. :)"Reading Human Behavior - Why Behavioral Analysis Makes Sense
"There is a WEALTH of lessons to be learned from the way Disney has continued to dominate the amusement park industry decade after decade. I never knew about this garbage can example before but I absolutely love it. This is the perfect example of putting yourself in the shoes of your customers, in a counter-intuitive way. The "group break" concept is very cool as well. I remember that in the days before I worked from home, that I always looked forward to breaking with someone, rather than by myself. I still do but nowadays I'll go to Facebook on my break being that no one's here at the house. :)"Tracking How Small Businesses Spend Money [INFOGRAPHIC]
"Seeing these infographics helped me feel grateful to have a virtual business that I can run from home where I only pay for things once. If you open up an office, you’re now paying monthly for that space AND you’re paying for all the office equipment you shove into it. So now you’re paying for where you live AND a place to work and you’ve probably paid to have a lot of the same equipment you have in your office, at your house – printer, computer, desk, etc. I've grown to feel babied by having no long commute and no gigantic overhead and it's little reminders like this post that remind me to have gratitude for the luxury of working from home. :)"How to Stay on Top of News in Your Industry
"Listening to audio programs in the car is huge. I've also found that you can get a lot of learning in while doing tasks like cleaning and cooking or yard work that don't ask you to expend any extra time. And if you are on the go listening on your phone, it's also a good idea to pause what you're listening to and use the recorder on it to dictate notes of things you'd like to remember about what you're learning, or perhaps even write about later. Blogger's Block: How to Overcome It
"The "Read More" advice reminds me of what the famed American author Stephen King says he recommends to fledgling novel writers who ask him how to improve their writing, in his book, "On Writing" . . . "Read a lot and write a lot." I love being reminded of this simple - yet important advice. :) "
