Advertising is a powerful means to influence the purchasing decisions of consumers.  Such influence, however, carries with it the potential for misuse and exposure to liability.  While the Internet and other electronic media have opened up innovative ways of doing business, they have also created areas of risk that didn’t exist years ago.  The framework of laws, regulations and codes governing advertising and marketing is complex and multijurisdictional.  This does not mean, however, that businesses should forgo altogether advertising and marketing in favor of avoiding disputes.
