Unfortunately my accountant consists of tiny pieces of paper and receipts in my pocket which invariable find their way into the washing machine and come out illegible. I'm definitely doing the DIY thing and it's not working.

Yeah, there's nothing like reaching into your pocket, finding a hardened wad of paper mulch, and then experiencing that sinking feeling when you realize what that wad *used* to be... I've done it plenty of times ;)
You should know that there are some really good, free, and easy-to-use accounting programs that you could download on to your computer which could help you keep track of how much you're making, who owes you what, and their contact info. Two options: turbocash.com and gnucash.com. It's a good start.
