In yesterday's blog, we covered the ways weak international business writing can destroy your brand. Now, here's a look at what can make your international communication weak along with ideas for how to strengthen it. (I get up on my soapbox for one thing in particular.)

Ann,

I totally agree! I am a project manager at a company which, among other things, does translations. I have people doing Dutch, Afrikaans, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Georgian and Portugese...to name but a few. We have come up with some blundered sentences due to culture and some translations along the lines of "wax tadpole!" I enjoy your posts!

Rivkah, it would be fun to see a post from you someday with funny translations you've seen. - Names left out, of course, to protect the innocent. :-)

Whoops, just saw your name...Ann! Anyway, your articles are a wonderful addition to BizSugar! You are providing a very unique and vital perspective on culture, multi-culturalism, business and marketing. I look forward to reading many more of your posts and much more of your wisdom and experience in the future!

(my husband Yoni's words..of course)

GlobalReach,

Firstly, is there a name we can call you (unless of course you prefer GlobalReach which is also okay :) Great follow-up post to yesterday's thought-provoking article. The point of adapting to the cross-cultural perspective is to me, the hardest. There are things about other cultures, namely soccer/football (which the rest of the world adores), and there are things about my culture that others don't get. We all come from different backgrounds, perspectives, history and influences, and it takes some homework, research and study to find out what will catch on with a particular audience.

Yoni (and Rivkah), thank you so much for your comments. Your encouragement is a bright point in my day! I agree, gaining a cross-cultural perspective is hard. And we'll probably never be able to fully understand someone else's perspective or culture. That's why it's so important to get help for our most important business communications. I'm always worried I'll end up with a "Wax Tadpole" goof. :-)
