Recently, India’s Central Board of Direct Taxes suggested that digital transactions such as emails, blogs and downloads could be taxed. A CBDT-appointed committee suggested that a 6-8 percent tax on a variety of services including these.The recommendation goes beyond the equalisation tax proposed in the 2016-17 budget for online ads and digital advertising space or any service for online advertisements. The equalisation levy was proposed as a way to ensure that global online businesses such as Alphabet, Facebook and Twitter which earn significant revenues here in India pay tax.
