Lots of managers want to motivate their employees. I believe that is the wrong approach. You don’t need to motivate but you have to take care that you don’t demotivate.

I share with you 3 ways how employee’s motivation can be easily destroyed and how you can avoid doing this.

Bernd - I like the way you portray the issue. If the managers stop demotivating employes that itself can solve lot of problems. The three reasons you mentioned are right on the mark. I would also add one more - stop taking credit fr yourself for the work employees have done. A good manager gives all the credit to its employees and takes the blames for himself.

I also think you still need motivating techniques along with stopping demotivating ones. The combination of the two will bring out the best in employees.

Thank you for your comment. Yes, taking credit for yourself for the work employees have done is another huge demotivator.

I do not totally agree that you need motivating techniques because I believe that most people are motivated by themself. Motivating techniques sounds for me to me too much like a mechanical technique. But maybe it is the phrase "motivating others" which I am not happy with. :-) I would rather use inspiring others than motivating.
