Once processes and attitudes are internalized, workers voluntarily carry out the 5S activities without having to be reminded. Shitsuke means not just following the rules, but using the brain to recognize and respond appropriately to 5S challenges. It means using common sense.

"When in Rome, do as the Romans do."
It seems to me that the 5S system is fine for the Japanese in Japan, where it's their own cultural ideas in action in their own land, but kind of odd when imported to the U.S., and forced on American workers.
