Much debate surrounds the notion that an entrepreneur is born with innate entrepreneurial abilities. Many believe that specific genes are present in all successful entrepreneurs. In fact, a 2008 study of identical versus fraternal twins conducted by Scott Shane of Case Western Reserve University, Nicos Nicolaou of the University of Cyprus, and other researchers from the King’s College in London concluded a tendency to engage in entrepreneurship was indeed genetic and heritable.

The study measured engagement in entrepreneurship in a variety of ways including self-employment, business startup, and even serial entrepreneurship. However, what the study did not measure was the correlation between genes and the ability for an entrepreneur to be successful. Yet it’s been my observation that successful entrepreneurs exhibit six behaviors over and over, time and again.

I guess I would be called a serial entrepreneur as I am a veteran of three start up with Rimot Support (www.rimotsupport.com) being the latest. Perseveres When Others Would Quit and hiring really smart people are the two most critical items mentioned. The media hypes the well funded, California / New York based start ups as they ideal petri dishes of ingenuity and creativity. I have personally had that experience and the reality is, nothing has been harder than starting a company. There are SO many reasons to quite. Money, self-doubt, stress, time, health, etc. In the end, the real entrepreneurs can't quite. It takes a ton of tenacity to make something from nothing. Every day, you have to quite the doubt and stay focused on your task. This can't be done without REALLY smart and dedicated people by your side. Whether that is advisers, staff or your immediate support circle (parents, wife, kids, etc..). You need them all to be successful.

In my experience, nothing has been more rewarding that taking an idea and turning it into a real business. One that employs folks, contributes to the community and make a small difference in the world.
