The downfall of Borders bookstores holds valuable lessons for small business owners. Losing sight of your core business and what made you successful can be the kiss of death.

Sad, but true, Sarah.

Even 4 years ago I could go there & buy DVDs of TV series I wanted, and find "classical" CDs (Renaissance lute, actually). They had jazz, too.

Now, bupkus.

It was particularly hard on me because I wasn't yet online (just under 1 year now).

Exactly, Sarah! Decades ago there was the Publishers Central Bureau catalog offering tons of books - but how do I know if I want it if I haven't perused it 1st? Locally, we had Waldens & B Dalton in the malls in those days - later, Borders.

The worst thing for me Duncan, even though I am online, is the pleasure of discovery you can't get anywhere but in a real bookstore. It's just not the same following links. I want to open the book!
