"Our surveys show..." "Experts recommend..." "My clients report..."

Marketing and advertising claims are a dime a dozen. But who knows what they actually mean?

Hi Rivkah,

Great post and you have brought up important points. We had a similar campaign with Oral B toothbrushes. "More dentists use Oral B". They can make that claim based on the way they designed the study and it was by giving dentists the toothbrush.

You will find probably a similar study with Trident and they would be able to back up the claims. You will notice that they qualify it by saying "surveyed". It is all on the design and the questions asked.

I have a similar problem with social media studies that are not a represented sample size and are one off. Again in is in the design and questions asked.

Susan,

You are right, it's about getting a valid statistical sample and asking questions in certain ways.

These things may not be accurate, but the public, including me most of the time, seems to accept it at face value.

Thanks,

Rivkah

Duncan,

Gosh, I just got home from work and didn't expect there would be so many comments waiting! Thanks for your response. The fact is maybe the ad was legit, but as you stated, they could just be full of it! We'll probably never know. There are so mant claims out there, who really knows?

Rivkah

Wonderful! Both of the Maisel's posted today. I remember the add campaign well. This is a good dissection of marketing.

I've dealt with statistics many times and they almost always are bent to mean what the purveyor wants them to mean. Basically, they all meet the strictest technical definition of "fact" and "truth", but they are pretty much always more of an "opinion" and often come across more as a lie than as the truth.

David,

I liken what you say to movies. Some say they are "based on an original story." Bits and pieces may be real, but then the spin-doctors get hold and play around with facts and figures until we have know idea where truth ends and fiction begins.
