This year’s American presidential race has been one of the most contentious in modern history. The level of polarization in the electorate is astounding. And in the middle of the mudslinging and grandstanding are some very, very uncomfortable brands.

It seems more like some brands -- Ford is one example -- are trying harder to distance themselves from the campaign rhetoric than has been necessary in past elections. That may be less about brands getting involved with the campaign than about those brands trying to distance themselves, at least publicly, from some of the more volatile discussions.

That's a good observation, Heather. I suspect that a contributing factor to what you've said is that we're scrutinizing rhetoric more broadly because more people are online, more of what is said goes public quickly, and there's a great deal of polarization (particularly in this election) that we haven't seen in some time.
