I like this article a lot and think it has many valid points. But I also think that free is a good thing and it doesn't have to erode value.
My example would be the good old library. It's free. It has a lot of value. And it has done nothing to eliminate bookstores or amazon.com. You may have to wait a while to get your hands on the newest bestseller though. The only downfall, as you have no doubt seen on Seinfeld, is that book you didn't return decades ago.
As far as free content watering down social communities, I think Bizsugar proves the hypothesis wrong. Once the spam is eliminated there remains a pretty good selection of quality material.
