It can take a lot of work and expertise to bring about a rapid recovery with minimum loss of legitimate and valuable online assets. How do you know if you got penalized by Google?

Normally you will experience a drop in traffic, either for certain pages or for the site as a whole. Check for a warning in the Manual Actions section in Google Webmaster Tools. But if the algorithm penalised you automatically you will get no message and more investigation is needed.
