As I visit a lot of blogs, I see some bloggers use a date and some don't and I have been wondering about this for some time. Does a date keep your content fresh and current?

A "date" for a blog post? I prefer a fig!

Seriously, why not, especially if the post is relevant for a finite period such as a news event.
