One suggestion is to keep everything important ABOVE the fold, ie so users dont have to scroll down to do something.

Excellent advice. A few years ago I realized that my content was getting lost because Google couldn't figure out what my blog was about. My personal blog is still kind of a mess but all of my targeted content was moved off to specific sites so that Google (and hopefully people) can figure out what the site is about.

Websites witch are noisy and full of all kinds links and ads are stressful to see. That do not bring visitors back!
