Majority of WordPress users will customize the themes that they use but they will not do so with the use of a child theme. This happens due to the fact that most people do not even know what the child theme is while not understanding that it is very easy to create one.

I agree, it is so important to edit the child theme rather than the original theme code. Creating your own child theme is a really good idea. I don't know how many times I have been frustrated by the inflexibility of a new theme, resulting in endless hours tweaking the code.
