Facebook’s Edge Rank is based on the multiplication of 3 scores. Affinity, Weight and Time Factor as described in the previous post.
Facebook now uses their edge rank system to display the post on your news feed that has the most comments or likes associated with it because they feel you will be more interested in this than another post from a friend that has not received any comments or likes. It’s important therefore as a business owner to maximize your edge rank in order for your content to be seen by as many people as possible.

I guess that's why some FB 'friends' seem to fall off the map - FB decides they aren't important enough. I'd thought them disappearing was my being relegated to 'lists', then I heard about this.
