All I can think of is contest and giveaway :) Invite subscribers to "like" your FB page, for example, and get a chance to win, say, an iPad.

Indeed... I know people who don't measure anything and kinda hope they want to get something out of their campaigns. Email marketing is a number game... without any before-after figures, how can we measure our success?

I was one of them, anyway :)

I absolutely agree about assessing before and after. If you look at what worked (or didn't) in your email campaign, you can make changes accordingly for future emails.
