I just heard PerryB talking about how he mixes social media together to get his end goal. Unfortunately, "80% of all Twitter tweets of this nature are thought of as “pointless babble”" (if I may quote Mr. Kantor's article). It is hard to get around that pointless babble, but a lot of the time people like that part, it's that exact thing that lets people see that you are human.

I think that Twitter should be a mix of conversational messages (what are you doing now) with "pass along value" things, including links to external blogs and sites. I know that some users are entirely searching for news for a specific topic they are interested in, e.g. the stock market.

The problem I see nowadays are the huge amount of sales people, marketers and others that are only using Twitter for sales pitches and promotions, without listening or engaging in the conversations going on. Luckily you could switch off the button on these "gush radio stations" / megaphones... ;)
