Even those who do understand some of it, and do understand that digital marketing is important, often renounce SEO and put their energy and resources into social media and email marketing. SEO agencies can learn from these small business owners who explain why they stay away from SEO.

I can understand why business owners would be reluctant to outsource some of these tasks, but they need to realize that it requires significant amount of knowledge and time to do it themselves. Yes there are some bad agencies out there and they can hurt you but that should not discount the work of everyone else. The key to success for many small business owners is to outsource non-strategic pieces of the business.
