The shock and awe of this update came from sites that have dominated the search results for years, but now Google says they are low quality content farms. There are a number of questions that the Farmer update begs.

I'd sure like to know how an algorithm determines what is high quality vs low quality content.

Glad I read this and glad that google made a change. A few weeks ago, I googled 'ringworm in dogs' (treatment, etc.) and the first few pages that showed up were full of advertisements and contained the same (non-specific) content. The 4th result or so came from an article directory containing lots of useless information... I googled the term again today and those 'shallow' sites that I remember did not show up on page one anymore. Good.

Exactly, most sites that are producing useful content got a rank boost because the "content farm" pages were knocked down - across the board.

Why does Google classify Mahalo.com as a low quality content farm? This will happen with sites like Quora too?
