SEM (search engine marketing) is the combination of both paid (PPC campaigns) and unpaid (SEO) online marketing activities. Research has shown that about 80% of clicks come from the organic results, which the search engines rank based on SEO factors. The other 20% of clicks comes from PPC ads along the top and side of the SERP. Some business owners believe that the amount of money they spend on their PPC campaigns (mostly Google AdSense), has a direct affect on how well their site ranks in the organic listings. While I can’t prove it, I’m 100% positive that this isn’t true.
