At Pea Soup Digital, we're sick of hearing lies about the industry we love. So to put the record straight, we've created the SEO Myths Debunked Infographic.

Yes, you are right about that. I hope it will change in the future. I believe that some kind of micro-payment / financial transaction for stuff on the Internet will remove spam.

Thanks for the update re. M.C. It is a bit sad that a big part of the data on the net is spam.

Indeed it is!

Thanks for your thoughtful answer. Then I will continue as I have done so far (13+ years)...

Btw: What happened with Matt Cutts?

No problem! Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment. Matt Cutts took a leave of absence to enjoy some quality family time. The last we heard, a new (but as yet unknown) head of Web spam had been appointed, meaning it's unlikely we'll see Matt back doing his thing in the same role any time soon!

PeaSoupDigital: I have to check out these tools. Have you written a post on the importance of high-quality incoming links? Could you say a "break-even" number for a small business site for incoming links, regarding search results, a base for advertising / sponsorships on the site?

Does commenting on other blogs and sites take in account for SEO, if you sign with your company URL?

We have written a post on safe link building that may be of some use: http://www.peasoupdigital.co.uk/blog/post/2015/04/09/how-to-build-links-and-live-to-tell-the-tale.

There isn't really a "break-even" number of links, but it's certainly a case of quality over quantity when it comes to building links, i.e. 10 links from high-quality websites is going to be a lot more beneficial than 10,000 from low-quality sites. Good links come from producing quality content on a regular basis.

Commenting on blogs, sites and forums isn't likely to have any real SEO benefit and company URLs are mostly "no follow", meaning you get no link juice. However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it. Commenting on relevant websites within your niche is a good way to increase authority and drive traffic to your website. So long as any comments that you leave are of value to the reader, participating is highly recommended.

What will come instead of Page Rank? How much is a incoming link worth to your site?

Page Rank alternatives are already available in the form of Moz, Majestic and Ahrefs' Site Explorer tools, all of which are very useful for determine what sort of weight a website carries.

Google says it has many ways of recognising problematic links and thus Page Rank is no longer needed, but that takes nothing away from the importance of quality inbound links. A "follow" link from a high-quality, relevant website is still the biggest factor in boosting the ranking of your website.

I enjoyed reading this as the author made it hilarious. It is true Page Rank is now dead and gone so that is one myth that has not been debunked. But really, I don't think they will ever get rid of SEO. It is here to stay and it keeps us on our toes.
