We've all known it all along. It used to be that you could not be harmed by inbound links for the very reason that it would open up the door to negative SEO. So what did people expect to happen when Google starts pounding sites for their inbound links?

Totally agree with you, Google used to grandfather in links built prior to an update, but with Penguin the grandfather died. It's unfortunate for site owners who have weathered so many Google storms.
