There is always someone who has something that you don’t have and that you are going to be forced to compete against. It’s your pet impossibility.

Grant must really be the exception. From 1980-1984 I read over 200 books on 20thC warfare & weapons (to help explain questions about mankind's biggest recurring folly after growing up during Vietnam). Many were by top generals in WWII - from the US, Germany, the Soviet Union, & Japan. Funny thing, no general ever made a "mistake" - there were always excuses as to not enough troops or ordnance, insurmountable odds, not being allowed to execute their plan (which may BE a good reason if the lunatic at the top forced his own plan - you know which lunatic), etc. But it was never them. I read ABOUT some generals who were known for working wonders given rag-tag material to work with, but they weren't the more famous ones writing books. Knowing this going in made reading their memoirs a lot easier. I never read Napoleon's memoirs, but I'm guessing he never made a mistake, either.
