As I've said before here on this community, I come from more of an entrepreneurial than straight sales perspective. This said, I know that my general comment to a sales person is that I'm "just looking." (Bet you that one always made you cringe too!) Problem is, when I say that, it's exactly what I mean. Don't get me wrong. I appreciate the need to sell a product and do the best to market my own services to people I believe may benefit. But I don't necessarily want to explain the reason for my store visit to a sales person unless I know they're really committed to helping me---even if that means they won't make a sale today or that they need to tell me they don't have what I'm looking for. Ultimately, as an entrepreneur I believe a product or service must excite a customer and that, while good presentation may help this effort, an attempt at good presentation of a product I don't need or want will never sell me. This, I think, is the real reason customers are "just looking" or will know it when they see it. The experience of too many attempts to sell them what they don't want instead of finding out what they need.
