Very good point - treat everybody you speak to as if they were a decision maker. You never know,they might be or have a lot of influence.

I will remember this good advice in my own efforts.

David: Could it be that the sales person is "too" good to woo the gatekeeper? I remember a certain company, selling office supplies. Their reps managed to please the gatekeeper (in our case, the receptionist) and got through to me as a purchaser with the style: "do you have 5 minutes, Martin"...

It isn't just about the getting past the Gatekeeper however. PAs and other gatekeepers can have an amazing amount of influence and if you don't respect them, your name could be tarnished before you've met your prospect.
