I don't know why people wait until the new year to start a new regime. I guess it's the dawn of a new year bringing with it a new level of hope. But it is the first step you take to changing that matters, not the date.

If you look at goal setting as s way of achieving your values, you don't have to "start" on January 1 and "stop" on December 31. If you want to have more fuel for your soul regarding sound principles on goal setting, I recommend you to check out the works by Dr. Edwin A. Locke.

Hi Denise, I like common sense approaches, great post! One of the things that I often notice with goal setting is that people set themselves up to fail in going to extremes rather than aimed for more doable targets over shorter time frames. As you point out in your post, people who achieve their aims are able to break targets down in to small manageable chunks. Great Reminders, Niall

I agree, Denise!

Growing up I never heard of New Year's resolutions - about as close as it got was giving up candy for Lent. I was 18 or 19 at a New Year's Eve party when I 1st heard the concept (I probably resolved to party a lot more the next year)! It's a tradition I never really took seriously. If something needs to be done, why wait till next year?
