I wanna be a (insert your own wanna here) so much. This is a phrase I hear quite a lot in my line of work. My reply to that is always So what is stopping you?

Great read, Mairead!

To use your Boxing analogy, some guys have it all - almost. They train hard, they've got stamina out the wazoo, they hit like a cannon ball, and they've got slick defensive moves - but they don't know about a glass jaw till Sonny Liston* reminds 'em just how hard some other guys can punch.

Duncan

*Referring to the late, great Cus D'Amato-trained Floyd Patterson - though he was knocked down by Ingemar Johansson 7 times in round 3 of their 1st fight, before Liston, many won't remember. He got up 7 times, too - that's called "heart" in boxing (not equivalent to "chin"). In business, that's learning from failure, and Patterson beat Johansson in their next 2 matches before fearsome Liston destroyed him.

Thanks Duncan,

Wow!! He definitely had IT!! It takes a lot of courage and determination to keep getting back up knowing what type of punch is coming at you...to be successful in anything in life, especially business you have to keep coming back knock down after knock down and find new ways to get past that.

To remind yourself about where you want to be, I think it's always worth remembering what it was that you wanted to do at the very start. Most business people allow their businesses to make them forget. When times are tougher, the answers to a lot of the questions above are in revisiting that first motivation, those initial reasons why?

Absolutely Niall. I've recently been suggesting to pals who are considering the self-employment route with whatever their passion is to have at least one pal who "gets" their passion too. On their down days they can remind them why they got into that line of business when they are too down to see it themselves. Sometimes hearing others remind us of our why can give it more Oooomph!
