This morning during my workout I was reminded about the reality of real, solid progress.

It's slow.

Hi Roy,

OK. Message received. But surely you must have a few tried and true techniques for making sure progress does continue, no matter how slowly. I'd love if you could respond to this in the comment section of the BizSugar community so that all our members can have the benefit of your response. How do you make sure you are making progress forward, and...are there any simple little techniques that do work to accelerate progress, adoption, collaboration?

Hi Roy,

Personally, I'm a big believer in forming helpful habits or rituals as a way to improve in key areas. For example, in the case of getting into shape, you might make visiting your local health club or perhaps even something as simple as a 20 minute brisk walk once a day a part of your regular routine. Eventually as these routines become comfortable, many of them become something we actually look forward to and miss when we don't complete. They are also something you can add to over time as your endurance or skill (depending on the habit you've formed) increases. I think the yardsticks you mention are fine, but forming helpful habits or rituals is a great way to get some of the hard work done. Imagine, for example, having helpful habits involving blogging regularly, needed action steps on your business plan etc. Activities do not need to be repetitive to turn them into a helpful habit or compulsion.

Heather,

Yes, the important part is - as you rightly said - progress! I'd throw out 2 thoughts about ensuring that you're heading forward:

1. Have key indicators to track how today compares to 2/4/6/12 months ago. If you don't have good indicators to track progress, you never really know the rate or reality of change.

2. Get lots of feedback. Whether from team members, customers, family, friends - whoever is best placed to comment should be constantly approached for specific and direct feedback. That way, more insights on how to accelerate progress can be uncovered.

Do you have techniques that you use in this area that you could share?
