Thanks for your comments. It is an interesting situation at the moment. As digital Marketers we try to guide businesses onto the platform because we know the value it will bring to them (and ultimately if they don't have a presence it will backfire on them in the long run) yet the audience is yet to turn up.

This is a great question and I don't think the answer really matters to Google. While everyone can benefit from it now, I think of it as one of Google's loss leaders and while they certainly hope people will use it, I think it's main purpose is to be the part of the fabric that ties users to other future products like Google Now and other things we haven't even heard of yet. Google+ is really cool, but kind of scary at the same time.

I really think the success with Google+ depends on what you're doing with it. For B2B, for example, or information driven businesses aimed at bloggers, social media experts, and entrepreneurs, I've seen Google+ drive much more traffic to blogs than Facebook and, of course, social sharing on Google+ gives content dramatic visibility in search. I don't think Google+ is the popular platform Facebook is and perhaps it never will be. But, like LinkedIn, I believe it has a critical role to play.
