And, I second Niall, "Wouldn't it be great if people just read one post of this nature before they start with social media" ;-)
I've said it before, but what surprises me the most is for people and companies to start on social media because they've heard of it, but, yet, do not have a strategy nor a plan. I see social media platforms as being additional channels of communications; and, all channels should start with a strategy and a plan of actions; knowing the What, Who, When, Where and Why at the minimum.

I'd add building community and genuinely engaging with people as very important, I've seen many Facebook pages with hundreds of thousands on fans and really poor levels of engagement. If a fan/customer asks a question and is completely ignored, what do businesses believe this does to their image/perception?
The reality is that social media can be both a force for good and bad, people sometimes forget that. Thanks for sharing, Niall
