When you’re logged into Facebook, what drives you to like, comment and share posts? Your friend puts up a picture of her young daughter; why are you inclined to ‘like’ this image? Little do we know when browsing Facebook, that there are many psychological factors moving in the background, which cause us to take a lot of the action we do when scrolling through your news feed.

For example, liking something on Facebook is very much a way of giving positive feedback to the things we care about. The Facebook like system works well, because:

It’s a quick and easy ‘nod’
It reaffirms something about ourselves – people can learn a lot about you from what you like
It allows us to express ‘virtual’ sympathy
It allows us to support a brand, movement or interest of ours
